Sire: Sailor's Spirit

On the stormy and rainy evening of April 22, 2006 baby Rayne was born. Wynstorm foaled out a beautiful colt (Sailor's highly anticipated first foal). While the foal was big and healthy, Wynstorm wasn't doing well and Rob Fera of Deerpath called to say that he wanted to take them to Guelph where the mare could be seen to right away - they thought she was bleeding internally.

The foal was great, strong and very feisty. He was healthy from the get go, and when I got to Guelph there were two vet techs sitting on him to keep him quiet while they attended to the Wynstorm, who kept nickering to him and he would struggle to get up. Once the mare was stable (as best as could be) they let him up and he trotted after his mom all the time bucking and fighting the technicians, because he was a big boy and could do it all himself. He drank easily and readily from the bottle, they were milking the mare into a bottle and he would greedily drink it up. I had a turn feeding him, he had a turn trying to eat my nose...bless him...

The head vet said they wanted to give him two bags of plasma as they were
concerned that he may not have been getting enough colostrum. He bucked
around the stall making all of us laugh and would go to whoever it was
holding the bottle and nudge them for it. He was far too tall to nurse from
the mare although he tried. I left for an hour while they ran more bloodwork on the mare. When I came back they said that she was still the same, no worse, so it was looking a bit better, still guarded but better. Then disaster struck. The foal had an allergic reaction to the plasma. Although rare, he had a massive reaction and complete organ failure due to the plasma transfusion. They were unable to revive him, and at four hours old, we lost our baby Rayne.

He was perfect. A very tall boy, friendly and inquisitive, four high whites on perfectly correct legs, a big huge star, snip and white spot on his muzzle and a skunk tail, my little man was gone as his mother clung to life.

Wynstorm fully recovered and has gone on to be a childrens hunter. Rayne will never be forgotten. In his memory, with the assistance of Rob Fera at Deerpath and a most generous auction from the equine community to assist in setting it all up, we have founded the Rayne Memorial Colostrum Bank.

Rest in Peace little man.
